House bill standardizing broadband nears approval

Broadband bill approval

A bill pertaining to accelerating growth of broadband service was recently passed through both the Senate and the House, and is currently undergoing its final approval at the Senate and the President. PC Mag writes that measure S. 1492 seeks to ensure underserved communities are provided with proper service, as well as updating the government's definition of what broadband service is. The FCC considers 200 Kilobits per second to be broadband, which is not concurrent with modern technology.

The bill gives the FCC 120 days to provide the revised definition, use nine-digit zip codes for broadband access reporting, as well as formulate a $40 million grant program for ISPs, which will be available for five years.

Representative Edward Markey initially introduced the bill to modernize the US' broadband infrastructure, bringing further advances to pricing, coverage, and speed. Markey feels that the country is running behind, and hopes the revised bill will demonstrate that to the Senate.

"Our current broadband data collection system has had serious problems for years," said Ben Scott, policy director of Free Press. "The absence of accurate information about the price, speed and availability of high-speed broadband has crippled our government's ability to advance innovative technology policies. In the last year, the FCC has taken some very important steps toward solving these problems. This bill gives more momentum to that progress."

    what is going on

Is this really the most important thing they should be working on now? How to grade the quality of people's internet connection? It's actually kind of funny, since the public mail server for Congress is failing under the load of emails disapproving of the massive handout to big business.

The only good thing Congress did was to NOT rush in and hand one guy $700 billion and tell him, here, you figure out how to fix the problem.

    Caps

I think they need to put an end to ISPs capping speeds and putting limits on the amount of data transferred. With these things in place, advancement many things such as streaming video are greatly threatened.

    Great Concept...

If this bill passes, US ISPs will feel the heat from our government to catch up with other nations. We're very far behind Japan and Europe with our broadband infrastructure.

What some people probably don't understand is that with an insufficient internet infrastructure, US companies who rely on the internet for communication, research, etc. will become less productive. This means less jobs, a struggling economy, and the eventual collapse of our nation's power and influence on the world stage.

There are already some reports floating around about internet traffic being routed around the USA because our infrastructure is OLD,SLOW, INEFFICIENT, and EXPENSIVE.

I also agree with chefpastry about this subject. The speed and data transfer caps are just a way for ISPs to gouge money from their customers and price gouging...is...ILLEGAL.
