Thursday, October 2ndNokia: iPhone did "big favor" for industry
Apple's entry into the mobile phone space was a "big favor" to the cellphone business by shaking it up, Nokia chief Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said Thursday. The executive notes that Apple's roughly 14-month presence in the market has produced a "credible competitor" that has led phone buyers to expect more from devices, pushing Nokia and others to improve their hardware and software. The Finnish company now sees the iPhone as a threat but also says it has yet to formally take on Apple's touchscreen model.
"Of course we need to be able to respond to any competitor and we will," he says.
The statements come just hours before Nokia is expected to launch the 5800 XpressMusic alongside full details of its unlimited Comes With Music service. As Nokia's first touchscreen cellphone, the 5800 is targeted at the same media-centric field as the iPhone with 3G, GPS and Wi-Fi as well as a full Symbian S60 operating system that supports smartphone-class software.
Although not mentioned in Kallasvuo's latest comments, Nokia has quietly acknowledged that it has lost share to the iPhone in the smartphone space, where the Eseries and Nseries have largely held a definite lead in the world market but have been at times undercut in price by Apple. While choosing not to mention any companies by name at the time, Nokia singled out the delayed launch of an individual "mid-range" phone, believed to be the 5800 XpressMusic, as a factor in lowered forecasts for summer phone shipments.
The Nokia official also believes his firm can stand up to offerings from Google and Research in Motion, noting that the "jury is still out" on Android and that a new initiative to bring Microsoft Exchange data to most S60 devices will give Nokia an advantage over BlackBerries by putting work e-mail on more devices.

Spoils
The iPhone is only a limb, the head being the Mac. It's an extension of the Mac experience. Once Apple builds its own ARM processors, the iPhone will stand alone with rivals battling each other for the spoils.
Appreciate the competitor
Oli-Pekka displays a great magnanimity in acknowledging Apple and iPhone to have affected Nokia's business contrary to the other CEOs from Microsoft, Verizon, HTC etc. Only a good and experienced general shall know the strength of its enemy. That knowledge provides him the capability to measure and plan for the future.
While Nokia is the market leader, I personally see no reason yet to switch from my iPhone. I have not switched from my mac since 1994 either, which is to say, I will probably be a iPhone user for a long time.
I do wish that all the companies focussed on the critical part of designing a phone lie Apple does - user experience first.
Right moves
The moment Nokia aquired Trolltech was the moment I could see that alone amongst the phone manufacturers they had 'got' what Apple had done.
Everyone else is hoping that someone (Microsoft or Android) will build their software stack for them.
Nokia have obviously understood that what has given Apple the edge is a strong platform and good native SDK.
Trolltech's Qt is a good foundation for a rival platform.
Broken paradigms

I expect to see great things from Nokia because they actually understand. Unlike Balmer, "oh the iphone it will suck" attitude. Nokia understands it has raised the bar, it has opened up the cell companies to more direct manufacture control and shown people will pay high prices for a good experience. So you can bet Nokia will learn from this and come out with something great to compete which I look forward to because that will push the iphone to get better too. Microsoft on the other hand, well I expect nothing as they dont get it.
