Samsung intros DVD burners

Samsung on Tuesday announced the upcoming release of three new DVD burners to add to its Super-WriteMaster series with the SH-S223Q SATA internal drive and the SH-S222A and SH-S222L PATA internal drives. All are capable of writing at 22X speeds, which translates to about 29.7MBps and, Samsung claims, is among the fastest speed currently available in commercial burners. The SH-S223Q and the SH-S222L also feature LightScribe technology that allows users to engrave CDs and DVDs with labels, photos and other designs.

The two PATA drives are meant for consumers who have older computers with the PATA interface but wish to upgrade their optical drives to modern standards. Like other burners in the line, Samsung’s newly released drives also allow users to write to 16X speed black discs at 22X speed, while 8X media can be recorded at 12X speeds. The drives can record DVD±R discs at the 22X speed, while DVD-RW media is limited to 6X write speeds.

The drives are also among the quietest, with levels ranging from 28dB at the 3,400rpm idle and 53dB at the 22X, 12,700rpm maximum write speeds.

Samsung has not revealed pricing information nor specific release information for its new drives.
