Mathematica 7 adds image and parallel processing

Wolfram Research has begun shipping Mathematica 7, his professional-level computation software. Aside from mathematics, the software can be used to model a variety of interactions in fields such as chemistry, economics and geopolitics. The seventh edition introduces an image processing component, allowing users to run functions related to composition, enhancement and transformation.

The underlying engine has meanwhile been improved with support for parallel processing, whether through multiple cores on a single computer or several computers networked together. Also present is an expansion of computable data sources, which can now include weather, the human genome, astronomical data and more.

Other additions to the software include Boolean computations, enhanced statistical model analysis, charting, information and vector field visualizations, and new spline support including NURBS. The Mac version of the software requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later, and costs approximately $2,495, although government and educational versions are also available.
