Nikon geo-tagging GP-1

Nikon has finally launched the GP-1 GPS Unit that connects to its digital SLR cameras' hotshoe and either the D90's GPS port, as well as the 10-pin remote sockets of the D3X, D3, D700, D300 and D200 and therefore allows each captured image to be geo-tagged. The GP-1 uses two LEDs to indicate connection status with satellites.

Nikon's new hotshoe-mount GPS module will let photographers save latitude, longitude, altitude and time information on each photo they capture. It takes the GP-1 either 5 seconds or 45 seconds to obtain satellite information, depending on whether the is hot- or cold-started. Some of the older DSLRs require users to download and install the latest firmware in order to be compatible with the GP-1. The saved data can be converted into map locations, showing users exactly where in the world each image was captured, by using ViewNX version 1.2 software that is available for download at no cost or by uploading them to Nikon's My Picturetown photo-hosting website.

The GP-1 GPS Unit will begin shipping later this month, with a retail price of $240. [via RobGalbraith]
