Apple wins trademark suit against Chinese company
Apple this week has won a trademark infringement lawsuit against a Chinese electronics company. New Apple Concept Digital Technology Co. was ordered to pay 400,000 yuan (~$58,000 USD), completing a battle between the two companies that began in 2006 when the Shenzhen-based manufacturer was ordered to stop using its trademark, according to China Central Television. New Apple Concept had used a logo that featured an apple with the characteristic missing bite.
The meager settlement is much less significant than the order to stop using the logo. Apple has held the registered trademark in China since 1993, with exclusive rights remaining until 2013.
The Cupertino-based company has been involved in similar disputes from time to time. A disagreement with The Beatles' company, Apple Corps, was resolved early last year with an agreement that the computer-maker would own the trademarks but license certain trademarks to the music company. More recently, a Vancouver Island college also came under fire for using an apple for a logo.
