30GB Zune players locking up en masse

updated 10:15 am EST, Wed December 31, 2008

Mass 30GB Zune lockups

Hundreds or thousands of Zunes appear to be failing simultaneously, according to accounts from official forums and other websites. The errors began at approximately midnight Eastern time, after which turning on a number of 30GB players results in them locking and hanging towards the end of the initial boot process. Critically, none of the standard reboot or reset commands appear to be useful in troubleshooting.

The cause of the hanging is unknown, but some Zune owners have suggested that the issue may only affect 30GB players with the most recent firmware, particularly as second-generation Zunes are so far unaffected. The coincidence of so many simultaneous failures may hint at a programming mistake connected to dates, but this is so far unconfirmed.

Technically-inclined Zune owners may be able to fix the problem by opening the casing, and then temporarily disconnecting the battery. This risks invalidating any warranties however, and could risk damage. Microsoft has yet to issue any formal reply or solution to the situation.

It does appear to be a major issue affecting ALL 30GB Zunes. The main thread in the Zume support site is already over 1800 posts. MS have also acknowledged the issue on the main Zune support page. There is already talk of class action law suits!! Looks like a software issue to me.

    Nomad

    This is the real story:

    1. MS borrowed some old code from the Nomad space probe (Star Trek, 1966?) to use in the Zune.

    2. MS programmers don't fully understand the concept of leap years, so when the Zunes woke up this morning they thought it was 2009, but since this year has 366 days, they were wrong.

    3. This triggered the Nomad code to STERILIZE anything not perfect, and they promptly self destructed.

    Subscribed Zunes

No no no you all have it wrong,

Much like M$ tried with music, users paid no heed to their license agreement with the Zune player...usage was based on a subscription plan.

The subscription ran out, so users must re-purchase the Zune to use it for two more years.

    leap second

I wonder if it's coincidental or not that these mass failures happened on the same day that "they" inject the leap second.
