No, really what is a zune?

People still do the "M$" thing? It's not as if Apple doesn't try to squeeze cash out of rocks, too.

It's obvious. The Zunes have heard a rumor about the next iPod, and they are giving up early! ;)

... but I love it when my prejudices regarding microsoft are reinforced. 2008 has been an excellent year. Here's to an even better 2009.

Last night I tried to turn on my Zune, and it looked like it was going to work. It started to load up at the Zune screen, but then it froze!I did everything I could possibly do, I tried resetting it and it still didn't work! I let the Zune sit by itself for about 5 hours and when I tried to turn it back on, the battery sign showed up so I recharged it. I really was convinced that it would finally unfreeze and work, but all the Zune did was freeze back up at the Zune loading screen. I've seen many people with similar issues!

Man, that's just hilarious. Sure, there's a bit of "Shoulda bought an iPod" schendenfreude, but really it's more that I despise MS and more or less everything it touches for a number of reasons entirely independent of the fact that I use a Mac at home, and it's nice to see anything that will hurt them, in however small of a way.

And yes, Apple tries to make money too. There is, however, a difference between a profit-oriented company and a predatory monopoly that has been convicted of such but never forced to stop. The billions they sunk into the XBox until they killed Sega was an example of how that works, something they were only able to do thanks to outrageous profit margins on the Windows and Office ends of their business. Those two divisions generally make about 5x what MS spends on them, meaning that for every $100 you spend on Windows, $20 goes to making the next version of Windows or fixing bugs, while the other $80 subsidizes the XBox, Zune, or whatever else MS is currently dumping money to, plus shareholder profits.

Why? Monopoly. Period. No reasonable company sees that kind of return, because in a non-monopoly situation they would be undercut by a competitor.

Microsoft is so incompetent that it can't even get the Y2K bug to work on time - it's 9 years late!

I was smug and laughing at the Zune failures, on New Year's Eve, just before midnight. I happened to look at my iPhone for the time and it was as dead as a doornail. This morning after making an appointment at the Apple store. I plugged the iPhone into my iMac(iTunes) for the third or fourth time and I got a beep out of it. One more connection and it showed up in iTunes. I was able to re-instal the software and update from the backup, but not before thinking it was bricked in some way. That'll teach me not to be smug about other peoples' misfortunes. Even though they are whacked enough to buy a Zune. Happy New Year everyone.
