NETGEAR readies new routers, TV set-tops

NETGEAR is using CES to announce several new products, beginning with new routers. The WNDR3700 is an 802.11n dual-band router, supporting both 2.4 and 5GHz frequencies. It is additionally equipped with gigabit Ethernet ports, and a USB port intended to connect network storage. Connection stability is enhanced by the presence of eight antennas. The DGND3300 is another dual-band 802.11n router, but whose main features include twin (NAT and SPI) firewalls and the ability to serve as a repeater.

The MBR624GU bridges 3G cellular Internet with Wi-Fi, relying on a USB modem supplied by the user. Some features include SPI and NAT, support for five IPsec VPN points, and intrusion logging and reporting. All three routers would ship in the first quarter of 2009, at prices of $179, $169 and $129.

NETGEAR has also developed two TV set-tops, designed to stream media to TVs. The ITV2000 brings Internet video to TVs in the form of hosting sites such as YouTube, streaming sites like BBC, CNN and NBC, and movie-on-demand services like CinemaNow. It does not come with any permanent storage by default, but supports playing video, music and photos from an attached USB or NAS drive.

The 2000's higher-end counterpart is the EVA9150, which in addition to Internet streaming can handle radio, Flickr and RSS feeds, and store up to 500GB of media on an internal hard drive. Media on a home network is automatically detected and organized into a central library; it connects to Mac, Windows and Linux computers, and can further accept files from NAS storage or up to two USB devices, including iPods. A dual-band 802.11n router is built in, and output options scale to 1080p video as well as passthrough Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD audio.

The EVA9150 is expected in February, at a price of $399. The ITV2000 will follow in early summer, selling for $199.
