Targus: laptop pads, bags

Targus is demonstrating new products at both CES and Macworld Expo. In San Francisco, the accessory maker unveiled a new line of "eco-friendly" laptop cases and bags for the Aluminum MacBook Pro and at CES, Targus is touting a new line of laptop cooling devices for PCs and Macs.

The Eco-Smart line of cases -- available this spring -- includes the Spruce topload, messenger bag and backpack and are "specially designed" for Mac laptops. Using 100-percent recycled nylon, the bags are PVC free. All plastic components are recyclable, and the metal parts are nickel-free. The black cases feature green trim and carry a lifetime warranty. The Spruce topload and messenger bags sell for $90 and the backpack costs $80.

At CES, Targus is releasing a full line of laptop cooling accessories to be available in March, including the Chill Mat, Chill Mat XC, Chill Hub XC, CoolWave(TM), and Stow-N-Go Chill Mat. The Chill Mat comes with two USB-powered fans that Targus says are designed to protect laptops from overheating without the use of an external power adaptor. The Chill Mat works with Laptops with up to 15.6-inch screens with a street price of $30.

For laptops up to 17-inches, the Chill Mat XC allows users to adjust the speed of the two fans and comes with a stow-away USB cable. The height-adjustable XC model has a $40 steet price. The similar Chill Hub XC adds a 4-port USB hub, for an estimated street price of $55.

For portable use, the Stow-N-Go Chill mat features an expandable design that allows users to have a full-sized cooling pad that takes up less space in luggage and briefcases. The USB-powered Stow-N-Go works with laptops up to 15.6 inches with a street price of $25.

Targus is also releasing the CoolWave laptop stand, providing airflow to protect desks and other surfaces from potential heat damage. The CoolWave supports up to 17-inch laptops and sells for $20.
