Monday, January 12thPalm readying webOS-based Centro?
Palm is allegedly preparing a second webOS-based smartphone that would take up the Centro name, an alleged leak to PalmInfoCenter says. The claimed first-hand contact says the next model after the Pre would be a sequel to the current Centro that would occupy roughly the same size but would omit the hardware QWERTY keyboard in favor of a larger touchscreen that Palm's new OS depends upon. Whether the 3-megapixel camera, GPS or Wi-Fi would also be stripped from the device is unknown.
The Centro update would reportedly be destined for Sprint US, like the Pre, but would ship significantly later and arrive in the fall instead of the spring. Costs are also unknown, though the Centro has regularly been one of the least expensive smartphones of any kind and may let Palm significantly undercut the price of competitors like the iPhone or BlackBerry Storm.

WebOS is insulting
WebOS is a slang term in México for testicles, although it's spelled "wevos". I hope they are not thinking of bring it down here named like that. Palm will bomb (more?)
good idea
I think it's a good move to test out a touchscreen-only approach (no hard keypad) with the Centro while riding the wave of their new Pre.
Companies keep claiming to have an iPhone killer but insist on including hard QWERTY keypads, which double the thickness of their phone sacrificing the elegance that iPhone achieves. If Palm slims-down the Centro they may have a chance of reestablishing themselves. But heaven help them with the SPrint side of the equation.

our Guest user in the first comment is bringing up a common myth about language.
The idea that Mexicans are incapable of understanding an american brand name, and will have some desparate need to associate it with a spanish slang word, is laughable.
It's like the old myth about Chevy Nova being spanish for 'no va' (no go).
Except you don't say 'no va' about a car in Spanish, just like we don't say 'no go' about a car in English. It's more like 'it doesn't work'...'it won't drive' etc.
Plus the accent is different between 'nova' and 'no va' and plus, one is two words, one is one word.
On top of that Nova is a popular brand of gasoline in Mexico....the myth has been thoroughly debunked.
So thanks for the opening to discuss...but here is how it will really work, just like us, Mexicans will understand WebOS is the operating system for the Palm Pre...that is, if they care at all about Palm anymore.
I think its a good device, and it may change Palm's fortunes. They absolutely should not change the name. The name causes no confusion at all...but changing names repeatedly, that, no myth this time, does cause confusion.
Nintendo Wii
They better not call it the Nintendo Wii when they bring it to america, because taking a Wii will have a whole new meaning.
