Toshiba NB100 64GB SSD

Toshiba has expanded its early footprint in netbooks with updates to its fledgling NB100. A new model of the 8.9-inch mini portable, the NB100HF, adds a rare 64GB solid-state drive in place of the usual rotating disk. Besides potentially improving speed, the SSD gives the computer battery life normally off-limits to these systems. Toshiba estimates about 5 hours of run time for the system, which also comes in a champagne gold and comes with Windows Vista Home Basic instead of XP.

An additional NB100H model comes with a slower but more capacious 160GB hard drive and is preloaded with Windows XP Home; despite the moving storage, the PC builder estimates battery life of about 3.7 hours.

Either system carries a 1.6GHz Atom, 1GB of memory, Bluetooth and a built-in webcam. Pricing is open on the Japanese market, where the systems are available today; Toshiba does make the NB100 available in North America but hasn't said whether these upgraded models will make the transition to the West.
