Dell could enter smartphone market in February

Dell smartphone rumors

Dell may be edging much closer to its emergence into the smartphone market, according to the Wall Street Journal. Although earlier speculation indicated a tendency toward the Windows Mobile platform, the latest report suggests the company has been experimenting with Android as well. The move could serve to hedge against difficult conditions in the PC market. The company will allegedly focus on high-end smartphones which would compete in the segment dominated by the iPhone and BlackBerry devices.

A Kaufman Bros. analyst earlier this month reported that supply chain investigations indicated that a Dell smartphone is "closer to reality." An accidental website leak in October showed two Pharos smartphones, the Traveler 117 and 127. Specifications indicated Windows Mobile 6.1 with the Microsoft Office Mobile suite.

Despite Dell's history with the Axim PDAs, the company has downplayed the smartphone rumors, although stopping short of outright denials. "I think you'll see us with small-screen devices that have capabilities of the devices [analysts] are referring to," said Michael Dell in September. He also suggested that the separation between notebooks, netbooks and smaller devices would eventually "get blurry and completely disappear."

    Oh, oh, let's create a phone like Apple's!

    There is still plenty of opportunity out there, but these large companies or so risk averse that they only enter established markets with imitation products.

    Another uninspired, 'me too' product in an already-crowded market. Really, who at Dell greenlights these things? Did they not learn enough from their failed iMacalike, their failed iPodalike, etc?

    Seriously, guys, you're good at pushing millions of PCs that sit under desks and in server rooms. Spend the money on improving those products and your customer service.

    There are enough phones out there alrealdy. Just go to Best Buy and look at the HUNDREDS of phones that all have no real distinct features about them from one another.... with exception to the iPhone and maybe one of the Android phones.

    They are already losing money on their piece of $hit computers, why waste even more money on a new venture that is doomed before if even begins.

    If I were Michael Dell, I would sell the company now while I could and give the money back to the shareholders.

    As a Sales Rep

    As a sales rep for a cell phone vendor I can say, frankly there are enough cell phones out there. Fact is most consumers don't really want choices. There are just a few phones I sell, iPhones, BlackBerries, Sony Ericssons, and basic Nokias. If the Customer wants an awesome phone that is like a mini computer, iPhone, if they do a ton of email or need it for work and need a smart phone, a Blackberry. If they are a kid wanting a cool phone that has random nifty features and lights up, a Sony Erricson, and if they're a crazy old person who lives in a rural area and wants a basic phone with good reception, I sell them a Nokia. I sell Motorolas to people who specifically want them, I don't mind Samsung I just never sell them, I hate LG, and I never push our Windows Mobile phones because it's very rare someone wouldn't be fitted better by a BlackBerry or iPhone. If Dell's phone is an Android one it might have a shot, otherwise there are already tons of Samsung, Motorola, and Palm phones running windows Mobile that aren't selling.

    Remember, they don't have their own OS. They have to rely on an off the shelf OS.

    Oh, but you weren't saying that when talk of Apple entering the market. There were enough phones then too.

    So what you say is we need less competition and choice, because more choice is just confusing.
