Dell MePhone Rumor

Dell's increasingly rumored first smartphone may hinge on borrowing the philosophy behind its computers if a new, alleged leak to Alley Insider late Thursday proves accurate. The tip alludes to the device tentatively being called the MePhone in a clear attempt to play on the iPhone name and would appropriately center on customization, though whether this would simply include shell colors and other cosmetic touches or else would focus on more open software isn't known.

The tip would also have Dell target a launch for September 9th to hit a symbolic 9/9/09 release, though why this would be is also unclear.

The rumor is uncorroborated by itself, though Insider says it has heard from its own sources that a Dell smartphone plan exists in some form. Current claims would also have Dell looking into using either Android or Windows Mobile, either of which are generalized phone platforms that support more deeply integrated native apps than the iPhone and play into the MePhone notion of a more customized experience.

to jump onto a new Dell platform that will be out for about 2 years tops before they cancel the miserably failed project and try to make everyone forget it ever existed. Good luck getting updates after that happens.

Dell, why do you even bother?

Because if you flip that upside down, and remove the slashes and zero, you get 666, the sign of the devil!

9/9/09 would work well if they're planning to start at a $99 price.

MePhone would be a lazy name.
They should just stick to their name "Dell"...
call it a "Delle" (like Tellie - the British slang for telephone).

Gee I wonder who this "source is for the "leak" as to Dell working on some sort of phone? Hmmm let me think. Could it possibly be a corporate consultant bozo who previously made a big splash that he was working with said company on another MP3 player that never panned out? Wasn't his name Lederly or Enderle or something?

MePhone? Really?

I pray to all things holy that this isn't the name of this device. If it is, why not complete the title and call it the "MeTooPhone". Sad.

I hope it IS

What's wrong with Dell doing something that everyone will immediately ridicule?

Then someone else can roll out the MySelfPhone and encourage people to buy all three.

Rezzz, you took my thought! My thought is: "More like the MeTooPhone."

Not to worry though... Dell is the bargain basement of computers, so it would follow they'll be the bargain basement of phones too, unless it ends up like the Dell Jukebox, then it'll just be the basement.

Let 'em try. At least it will provide more incentive for people to buy Blackberrys and iPhones.

They couldn't use "MyPhone" for obvious reasons but "MePhone" is wrong even at a grammatical level.
