Fido gets BlackBerry Pearl

Canadian wireless provider Fido on Wednesday announced it is offering the BlackBerry Pearl 8100 smartphone from Research in Motion. Only available in black, the handset is being priced as low as $25 CAD on a three-year voice and data plan. The lowest-priced data plan is the $15-per-month unlimited Personal Email on BlackBerry.

With higher plans, the handset will also allow users to browse the Internet and connect to online social networks such as Facebook and MySpace, and photo-sharing sites such as Flickr. The phone is limited to 2.5G EDGE speeds, but should nevertheless connect to Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Google Talk and BlackBerry Messenger for real-time chat. The 8100 otherwise sports a 1.3-megapixel camera with flash and digital zoom, as well as a Bluetooth wireless receiver. A media player is likewise integrated, fed by files stored on microSD cards.
