Zii Android HD playback

Creative subsidiary ZiiLabs on Thursday announced it will showcase HD video playback capabilities on February 16th at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The capability will be thanks to the company's ZMS-05 media processor and platform on Google's Android platform phone. ZiiLabs promises to offer 1080p resolution video playback for the first time on handheld devices.

At the Consumer Electronics Show, ZiiLabs introduced the ZMS-05 for its StemCell Computing architecture. The ZMS-05 is a system-on-a-chip design that includes two ARM cores and integrates all necessary controllers. The chip's software cores can be repurposed for a particular task. The process mimics the unified shader processors of current video cards and is touted as capable of providing supercomputer-like acceleration.

ZiiLabs expects the chipset to be available for Android handsets later this summer. [via Epizenter]
