Nokia intros GPS handsets

Finland's Nokia at Mobile World Congress in Spain on Monday introduced two new handsets, the 6710 Navigator slider and 6720 classic candybar, both of which include assisted GPS functionality with mapping and geotagging that work together with their 5-megapixel cameras. The cameras have Carl Zeiss optics and dual LED flashes. The 6710 Navigator has a 2.6-inch, 320x240 color screen with a built-in 3D imagine engine and a screen optimized for outdoor viewing along with an ambient light sensor.

The handset has 50MB of internal memory and ships with a 2GB microSD memory card pre-loaded with mapping data. The quad-band GSM handset can also be used on the 900MHz, 1900MHz and 2100MHz HSPA bands for 3G. It also includes Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP support for connecting wireless headphones or headsets. It runs on the Symbian S60 3.2 operating system, and the Nokia Maps 3.0 software includes lifetime licenses for Drive, Walk and Traffic navigation modes.

The mapping software was recently updated with Ovi integration, allowing users to plan routes on their home computer and sync them to their phone. The maps can now show high-resolution aerial images, 3D landmarks in more than 200 cities, a compass, terrain maps and weather service, among others.

The Nokia 6720 classic has a new active noise cancellation feature that clears up conversations in noisy environments. There is a TV out connection for European PAL systems to allow easy sharing of images and video. The screen is sized at 2.2 inches and a resolution of 320x240 pixels. Built-in memory is fixed at 128MB and a 1GB microSD memory card is included. Like the 6710, the 6720 has both quad-band GSM and tri-band HSPA network capability.

Full web browsers and comprehensive e-mail support are integrated into either handset. The 6710 Navigator ships with Nokia's CR-111 car holder and is available in brown and titanium colors, while the 6720 classic can be had in brown or grey. The former ships in the summer, priced at the equivalent of about $390 before carrier discounts, while the latter ships in the spring, priced at about $320.
