AccuSTOR enclosure ships

Sans Digital has released the AccuSTOR AS212X2 2U 12-bay SAS enclosure, which it says is the first JBOD rackmount to overcome the lack of monitoring ability when utilizing a RAID controller card. The enclosure is built with a selectable switch that allows hardware monitoring with various RAID controller interfaces. The feature also allows system administrators to check hard drive status, power supply and cooling fan information.

A user-selectable switch allows support-monitoring using industry-standard SCSI Enclosure Services technology. Compatible RAID cards include cards from ATTO, Dell, Intel, LSI and Adaptec, among others.

The new enclosure holds 12 SAS or SATA drives and connects via a single SAS cable. In RAID 6 mode it delivers 500MB/sec write and 700MB/sec read speeds. Up to four enclosures can be daisy-chained, with support for configurations containing up to 48 drives.

The AccuSTOR AS212X2 2U 12-bay SAS enclosure is now available for $2750 without disks. Customers can also purchase bundles that include drives, with options ranging from a 6TB package for $3700 to an 18TB configuration for $5000.

    RAID

So does this unit have an on board raid controller of some kind? If so by definition this would not be a JBOD. And most RAID arrays have monitoring through SES (SCSI Enclosure Services). If it is just a JBOD with no hardware raid capabilities on board then it would not be the first to monitor using SES SUN Microsystems has several JBODS that do this. Also if you choose to use a RAID HBA you can implement hardware RAID and the SES monitoring is passed through the RAID card on the SUN JBODS. This is not new to Sans. SUN has 12, 24, and 48 Slot JBODS that do this. http://www.sun.com/storage/disk_systems/expansion/
