WD 8TB storage system
Western Digital has announced an upgrade to its WD ShareSpace four-bay storage system, resulting in an increased storage capacity from 4TB up to 8TB. The enhanced storage is made possible by incorporating 2TB Cavier Green drives. In addition to the larger capacity, the new version is also designed to improve the system's read and write speeds by up to 30 percent for large media files, and includes a DLNA certified media server to help with streaming music, photos, and videos to popular DLNA-certified devices such as the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
Other features of the latest WD ShareSpace provide users with an iTunes server for sharing music, a download manager that supports scheduled downloads through both FTP and HTTP, and an e-mail alert system that monitors the drive and system health and e-mails users if a problem has been detected. The storage device also offers automatic and continuous network software backup for up to three computers. One added feature designed specifically for a PC and Mac, enables a MioNet remote web access ability that allows users to access the drive from anywhere.
Lastly, the WD ShareSpace includes 3 USB 2.0 ports, and RAID 0/1/5 capabilities. The storage device can be found on the Western Digital website and currently priced at $1700.
