Sony Big PS3 News Rumor

Sony is purportedly on the verge of a major PlayStation 3 announcement for Tuesday, a new rumor suggests. Without directly citing a source, Smarthouse claims a "global" announcement is set for Tuesday. Actual details are equally unclear, though the site infers that it may include a significant price cut on the PS3 or else a cross-platform firmware update with important interface or feature changes.

While an earlier rumor of a price cut last month proved inaccurate, Sony has been under increasing pressure to drop the price of a PS3 below $399 since it became apparent that sales of the console were starting to shrink year-over-year while Microsoft and Nintendo sales continued to grow. Developers have warned that it may be difficult to keep producing games for the system while the financial incentive continues to drop.

Sony has publicly acknowledged the desire for a price cut but has officially said its short-term goal is to render the PS3 profitable.
