PS2 reduced to $100
Sony's director of hardware marketing, John Koller, has officially announced that the PlayStation 2 gaming console will begin selling for $99.99 starting tomorrow, April 1st. This represents a $30 price drop from the current price, roughly 23 percent, and may be the source of rumors of a PS3 price cut. Sony has consistently denied any PS3 reductions.
The PS2 was first launched in 2000, and the system is close to doubling the typical five-year lifespan of consoles. Koller attributes the longevity to a wide range of titles, set to reach 1,900 in 2009. New games scheduled to release for the system include MLB '09, Ghostbusters, Guitar Hero: Metallica and Motorstorm: Arctic Edge. Earlier this year, Koller also announced that the PS2 had reached 50 million in sales in North America. It is not known when the PS2 will be officially discontinued.
