RIM ships 7.8m BlackBerries in early 2009

RIM Ships Near 8m BBerries

RIM this afternoon set a new record quarter for itself by shipping 7.8 million BlackBerries between December and the end of February. The number is over a million more than the company's previous record of 6.7 million last quarter and includes word exactly half of the new buyers, or 3.9 million, were new subscribers to BlackBerry service. RIM shipped a total of 29 million of its smartphones through its just-ended fiscal year.

The company didn't provide year-over-year stats for its phones but did note that its revenue for the three-month span surged 84 percent compared to the same timeframe in calendar 2008 and topped nearly $3.5 billion.

RIM assigns much of the improvement to the successful launches of newer phones like the Curve 8900 and Storm, which both shipped in larger quantities. The company's co-chief Jim Balsillie sees "exceptional opportunities" for the early jump to spill over into the rest of the year.

The shipment comes despite a continuing tough world economy and suggests a likely leap in market share for RIM, which has been fighting Apple for control of US smartphones and contributed to significant plunges in share for Nokia and other competitors. Apple at its highest point shipped 6.9 million iPhones last summer and isn't slated to reveal how well it fared in its own quarter until April 22nd.

    So much for the death

    of RIM and the BlackBerry. Of course, the company will be dead in two more years because they'll be overrun with iPhones or so at least the story goes.

    There's enough space in the smartphone market for both RIM and Apple to make money for some time to come.
