Digeo on Thursday rolled out an update to its Moxi HD DVR that significantly expands its role as a media hub. The new version adds DLNA support to stream music, photos and videos from nearby PCs and other devices on the local network, such as PlayStation 3s. It also takes advantage of new paid software from PlayOn that will push web video from Hulu, Netflix and other sites from a PC to the Moxi without needing to visit the web.
Other additions include the ability to bookmark websites at the Moxi website and view them later, streaming for Rhapsody music subscriptions and the option of steering Z-wave-based home automation devices like home theater or lighting systems.
The update is free for the Moxi set-top box, which has a one-time cost of $800 and already carries dual HD video tuners and 500GB of hard drive space; early adoptees will also get a free license for PlayOn, which normally costs $40. Digeo's move further contrasts its DVR against those from TiVo, which already has support for Amazon VOD, Netflix and other media services but which requires a subscription.
