Acer's recently introduced Timeline ultra-thin notebook computers are suffering from a panel shortage, company chairman JT Wang confirmed to DigiTimes in a Thursday report. Poor yields from a particular supplier are now said to have temporarily set back Acer's plans. A new supplier was found, however, and the shortage will be resolved, with just three of ten planned models delayed for about eight days.
The Timeline series is one of the first systems based on Intel's CULV platform and so is designed as a budget ultraportable; as a consequence, it needs a thinner than usual LCD to maintain its slim profile.
Despite the slight shortage, Wang said Acer's total notebook shipments, revenues and profits will all grow in the second quarter compared to the first. He went to say notebook sales are expected to grow by 35 to 40 percent in the second half of the year compared to the first, and sales in 2009 will be 25 to 30 percent higher than 2008. Wang expects Acer to become the largest vendor of notebooks in 2010.
