Acer phones in US by 2010

Despite a rumored Acer Android-powered handset coming this fall and the release of a number of Tempo smartphones in other markets, Acer will not bring any of these portable devices to the US market in 2009. Instead, Acer spokespeople say the company will introduce smartphones in 2010, according to a Thursday GearLog report.

While no reasons are known for the delay -- the head of Acer's smart phone division, Aymar de Lencquesaing, has said he was hoping to release smartphones before Christmas –- it is believed Acer is encountering problems with US carriers.

Back in February, Acer revealed it would try to make a splash in the US market with its Windows-powered handsets by offering them free of charge via subsidies when they launch at providers AT&T and T-Mobile.
