Best Buy to get 4 Pres
Best Buy stores are allegedly restricted to an initial distribution of 4,250 Palm Pres for the June 6th launch day, an unnamed source has told the Boy Genius Report. If true, each of the 1,000 stores to sell the device will only get 4 units at first. A separate source claims that RadioShack will only receive two phones per store, with availability limited to coastal areas such as New York, New Jersey and California.
An earlier report suggested Palm plans to ignite perceived scarcity through limitations on the number of units shipped, just 375,000, for the first wave. The quick sellout could potentially drive consumer demand and lead to an increase in headlines.
The company will be competing against the iPhone 3G, which sold 1 million units over the launch weekend in July of last year. A Polish carrier attempted to exaggerate demand for the phones, hiring actors to stand in fake queues in front of 20 stores around the country.
"We don't intend to advertise it heavily early on because we think we are going to have shortages for a while," Dan Hesse told PC Magazine. "We won't be able to keep up with demand for the device in the early period of time."
The Pre will be available on Sprint's network for $200 after a $100 rebate. Customers can find the handset at the Sprint stores, Walmart, Best Buy and RadioShack, among others.
