New Canon 5D firmware due

Canon on Tuesday announced it will soon be releasing a firmware upgrade for its EOS 5D Mark II DSLR camera that will give users control over the manual exposure control in video mode. It gives filmmakers the ability to adjust the camera's ISO, aperture and shutter speed settings while in video mode. Currently, the 21-megapixel camera relies on a fully automatic mode when recording videos and may not necessarily capture low light or the right depth of field.

With the firmware update, shutter speed adjustments will range from 1/30th of a second to 1/4000th and ISO could be adjusted from 100 to 6400 and the extended H1 setting of 12,800. With the flexibility, users can now create a shallow depth of field by selecting a wide aperture in video mode. Unlike in regular shooting mode, there will not be shutter or aperture priority modes, which automatically set the other settings accordingly to maintain the same level of exposure. It’s not known if users will be able to make the adjustments on the fly, while recording a video.

The firmware will be available as a free download on June 2nd.
