OWC ships new drive

OWC today launched a 500GB, 7200RPM version of its Mercury On-The-Go Pro mobile hard disc. The drive reaches peak speeds of 100MBps via FireWire 800 and is available with three connection options, being joined by the earlier FireWire 400 standard and USB 2.0. OWC is also offering a less expensive dual-interface FireWire 400 and USB 2.0 model as well as a low-cost, USB 2.0-only version. The internal drive is a SATA 2.5-inch disc with a 16MB cache.

The On-The-Go Pro enclosure is a shock-resistant polycarbonate acrylic case that runs fanless to provide low-noise performance. The drives use either Oxford Micro or JMicron chipsets for the interfaces. The On-The-Go Pro comes with all the required interface cables, a three-year warrantee and a software package that includes Carbon Copy Cloner, Intech SpeedTools and back-up software for both Mac and Windows. The drive also ships with a carrying case.

The triple interface drive is $240, the combo interface costs $220 and the USB 2.0 version is $180. They work with Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later, and the drives with FireWire 400 can work on legacy Mac OS 8.6-9.2 systems. Windows requirements are Windows 98SE or later.
