OCZ debuts 1TB, 3.5-inch solid-state drive

OCZ Colossus SSD

OCZ at Computex today upgraded its solid-state drives with its first drive built from the start as a 3.5-inch SATA II desktop drive. The Colossus fills out the bay area by pairing two drives together in a RAID 0 stripe. OCZ isn't prepared to make performance claims but should deliver much faster performance through the Colossus than any of its 2.5-inch drives while doubling the maximum capacity.

Early editions will carry either 512GB or 1TB of storage. OCZ characterizes the Colossus as a prototype and so hasn't set out ship dates or pricing, though the cost will be significantly higher than for the 250GB drives the company offers today.

Sweet! But I hate to even think of how expensive that sucker will be. I'll probably faint when I hear the cost.

controller please?

If they don't mention the drives internal flash controller, than its hard to get excited. OCZ has sold some really poor drives in the past (in terms of having write waits up to 1 second or more), as if they were somehow super fast drives.

Waiting to find out what the drive really is from a performance review site.

you can do this yourself

by the way, you can buy a 3.5" drive bay that holds two 2.5" drives already. They sell them at new egg for $35. Just add two SSD drives, and set them up in a RAID 0 set.

You can essentially do this today, say you bought a drive bay for $35, and 2 Corsair P256, for about $670 each...talking waht $1375 for the setup, and that would be a 512GB solution.

hmmm OUCH....not that that sounds good or anything.
