T-Mobile G2 Details Soon

T-Mobile this afternoon said it would release details of its sequel to the G1 later this month with the expectation of shipping the phone itself sometime in early summer. The company doesn't provide any details of the phone itself but is known to be bringing a localized version of the HTC Magic with T-Mobile-native 3G and an upgraded 5-megapixel camera. It will likely be branded as the G2 and should be thinner and sleeker in return for dropping the hardware QWERTY keyboard in favor of software-only input.

The move is important for T-Mobile, which has had the only Android phone for the US since October. With both an updated iPhone and the Palm Pre scheduled to launch in the near future, the fourth-place carrier will also depend heavily on the Magic/G2 to return attention to its lineup and avoid losing customers to AT&T or Sprint.
