Verizon's Touch Pro update adds Visual Voice Mail

updated 04:20 pm EDT, Tue June 9, 2009

Verizon updates Touch Pro

A new firmware update was recently approved by Verizon Wireless for the carrier's HTC Touch Pro handset. Firmware version 1.08 has three major improvements, including adding Verizon's Visual Voice Mail functionality. It also allows users to access the GPS sensor via Google Maps and Windows Live Search for Mobile, effectively unlocking it.

Joining the Samsung Omnia in Verizon's lineup in offering Visual Voicemail, accessing it on the HTC Touch Pro will require users to pay an extra $3 per month for the service. The Touch Pro is the first Verizon handset to unlock the GPS sensor, however, with the Samsung Saga and Samsung Omnia expected to follow via their own firmware updates sometime soon.

Version 1.08 also adds EVRC-B codec support for improved managing of calls on the network during high-demand instances.

The PCD-, HTC- and Verizon-approved update can be downloaded free of charge via PhoneNews before Verizon itself makes it available. [via PhoneNews]
