WD MyBook Studio II 4TB

Western Digital on Tuesday launched one of its largest home drives with an upgrade to the My Book Studio Edition II: the new model pairs two 2TB drives together in a RAID 0 stripe for a total of 4TB of space, affording it enough room for very large backups or other media. As before, it comes pre-formatted in HFS+ for Macs and is seen as particularly useful for large Time Machine backups.

The potential speed of the drive is helped through the quad interface, which also returns for the 4TB capacity. Mac users ideally attach the drive using FireWire 800 but also have the choices of FireWire 400 and USB 2.0. Those with expansion cards, or Windows users with the ports built-in, can also use eSATA. An accessible enclosure lets owners replace one or both drives without having to replace the entire array.

Western Digital plans to make the 4TB Studio Edition II available later today for $650.
