Clearwire WiMax in Vegas

Internet provider Clearwire has recently began offering its high-speed mobile WiMAX services in Las Vegas, before it performs an official, full commercial launch later this summer. Residents of the Nevada city can now order it online, even before storefronts and ads are built and placed. This is the third city Clearwire has launched WiMAX in, following Atlanta, and Portland, Oregon releases earlier this year.

As part of its agreement with Sprint, the Sprint 4G-branded Baltimore market will also come to Clearwire at un undisclosed time later this year. Nine other commercial markets are expected to be added in 2009, including five new cities that include Chicago, Philadelphia, and Dallas/Fort Worth. Clearwire's fixed wireless markets in Seattle, Honolulu and Charlotte will be converted to offer mobile WiMAX capabilities as well.

Clearwire has not announced which vendors it will partner with in Las Vegas to sell its WiMAX gear. The provider's networks are said to offer 12Mbps download speeds under ideal conditions and real-world speeds closer to 2-4Mbps, or about double that of conventional 3G networks. [via UnStrung]

Go to www.surfclearwire.com to activate if you are in Atlanta, Portland, or Las Vegas. These guys give you the best deal by offering a gift card or free months of service and let you try it for 7 days to make sure you want it.

Clearwire expects to bring service to 80 markets and up to 120 million people by the end of 2010. Some of the additional markets planned to launch in 2009 include Chicago, Charlotte, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Honolulu, Philadelphia and Seattle. Markets planned to launch in 2010 include New York, Boston, Washington, D.C., Houston and the San Francisco Bay Area.
