iPhone 3G S Early Upgrade

AT&T this afternoon offered an olive branch to existing iPhone 3G owners by offering early upgrade pricing for the iPhone 3G S. Those who would only qualify for upgrade pricing in July, August or September will now qualify for the lower prices on iPhones as of the iPhone 3G S launch this Friday. Previously, these customers would have had to pay $399 for an early upgrade to a 16GB model or $499 for a 32GB edition.

The carrier has also narrowed down the timing for the addition of MMS to iPhones running OS 3.0 and expects the picture and video messaging feature to go live sometime in mid-summer; previously, it had only said this would happen sometime later in the summer. Data tethering is also promised "a little bit afterwards" by the company but doesn't have a more specific timeframe.

    Upgrade eligibility...

I wish there were more details on this. I certainly hope their online system is updated to reflect the change on Friday. I'd hate to go stand in line only to have the person at the checkout not be aware of this policy.

I know the video said "as of Friday", so I'll be patient, but as of today (Weds), my account still says I'll be eligible in July.

As for the whiners? Sounds like they made this happen! Nice job guys.

    Not so fast

Just got off the phone with AT&T. These upgrades are only for "special" customers with a 3G. In this case, special means that you pay more than $99 each month on your bill. I got the 3G on day 1 last year, but since my bill falls a hair under $99, I'm not eligible to upgrade at the reasonable price until December.

    Dangit!!!

    Waa! Waa!....

I signed a two-year contract and you won't let me break it. Binding contracts mean nothing to me. Waaa! If they raised my rates with a fixed contract, I would take them to court. Waaa!

    No longer eligible!

On June 6th I went on-line and in the store (to verify) and I was eligible on 7/12/2009. Now after this wonderful promotion I'm not eligible till 12/12/2009!!!!! I could have waited the extra 2 weeks AT&T!
