WD World Edition II NAS

WD on Wednesday announced the launch of its redesigned My Book World Edition II dual-drive network storage system (NAS). Available in 2TB and 4TB capacities, the dual-drive systems ship set up in a mirrored (RAID 1) drive array, backing up data simultaneously to both drives, making it safe in case one fails. WD also includes backup software meant to make scheduling automatic data backup easier for inexperienced Windows PC users.

The World Edition IIs can also act as media servers, with DLNA support that allows users to share music with their Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 gaming consoles, wireless digital photo frames and similar devices. There is also an integrated UPnP media server compatibility. Users will have access to their drives from anywhere with an Internet connection thanks to the MioNet remote access service included with the drives.

The new WD NAS devices are compatible with both Macs and Windows systems, and get online through a gigabit Ethernet port. As with all My Books, a capacity gauge is built-in for a visual representation of how much space is left over, while a USB 2.0 port lets users connect USB flash drives or external hard drives for extra capacity.

The 2TB My Book World Edition II NAS is priced at $400, while the 4TB version costs $700. Both are now available.
