Apple ordering cameras for "all" iPods?

iPod Camera Order Leak

Apple has been ordering enough camera sensors that every iPod except for the shuffle could have a camera with its next update, Asian sources claim. The American company is believed to be ordering cellphone-quality units worth about $10 but in too large numbers to simply apply to iPhone orders. Which models would get the update aren't specified by TechCrunch, but it's speculated that more than one iPod model would have to be covered given the sheer numbers.

The assertion supports rumors of camera-equipped iPod nano and iPod touch updates and arrives just as cases have appeared for "iPod nano 5" and "iPod touch 3" on DealExtreme, each of which shows a conspicuous hole on the back that would logically fit a camera. No such cases have appeared for the iPod classic, suggesting that if it remains in the lineup it will go without the extra features.

Such leaks have been historically very questionable, but the iPod nano case also supports incidental claims that have a larger, taller screen arriving on the music player in addition to the camera. Apple has also made job postings that, until edited, looked for engineers to develop cameras for both iPhones and iPods.

Any introduction of a camera is likely to have a significant impact on the Internet photo and video markets. Just the addition of video in the iPhone 3GS has triggered a quadrupling of YouTube uploads from phones, while the iPhone's inclusion of a camera has regularly made it one of the most popular cameraphones on Flickr since its debut in 2007. The iPod nano is only likely to have a still camera due to interface and processor concerns but could potentially disrupt entry-level compact cameras; if the iPod touch includes video, however, it could affect sales of pocket camcorders like the Flip Ultra HD that have HD recording at a similar price but lack Internet sharing and on-device editing.

    What else might go in?

If they do put a camera in the Touch, I wonder what else might get added at the same time. A microphone, almost certainly. But also a compass, and perhaps GPS? That's stretching it. But a camera and microphone would mean that I'd probably upgrade my existing second-gen Touch to a third-gen model.

    Sport

Always wondered why Apple never came out with an iPod sport... probably because they wouldn't know whether to make the nano, the classic or the touch sporty and ruggedized.

As for Camera in the touch I've been saying this would happen for a long time. Though it would have been nice if Apple would have gone with something above cellphone grade cameras.

    Also

The two cases appear to have identical pairs of holes on the backs, in addition to the camera openings. Why would the same holes be needed for the touch and nano? Some other new feature?

    shuffle cam

Am I alone in thinking a shuffle cam would be more disruptive than any other iPod camera? It would be like those old Philips usb camera sticks without an interface but even more prevalent and with an order of magnitude more memory.

As for the iPhone 3GS quadrupling youtube phone submissions, I'd like to know how much of that was over 3G submissions vs wifi. That bit will inform how much of an impact the iPod Touch camera will have vs the Flip.

    iPod Sport

I agree with two previous posters. Apple needs a ruggedized and waterproof sport model of the iPod touch, perhaps with a larger and longer life battery. It'd be great for hiking, boating and backpacking tours.

    No more classic

I have a feeling we won't see the iPod classic get updated this time. Pretty soon flash capacities will catch up negating the need for a disk based iPod.

I predict a 64GB iPod Touch, and 32GB iPod Nanos.

    impact

I doubt the impact would be significant. The fact that phone upliads quadrupled on YouTube the first week is insignificant because it could be due to just people playing with a feature. Not to mention that few consumer phones have this capability.

But it doesn't mean there's more videos posted, just that people don't have to wait to post the picture of theirskateboarfing friend getting hit in the nuts.
