Blockbuster, Samsung deal

Blockbuster and Samsung on Tuesday announced they have entered into a partnership that would see Blockbuster's online movie library available for users of Internet connected Samsung Blu-ray players, HDTVs and home theater systems. The Blockbuster OnDemand service, with Blockbuster titles getting preferred positioning on the virtual storefront. At the same time, Blockbuster will carry the compatible Samsung devices in its stores.

Blockbuster OnDemand users will be able to search and browse movies on-screen while also reading details or ratings and viewing trailers. In contrast to most Netflix devices, the process is entirely PC free, with the browsing and managing of rented or purchased movies done via the remote control.

Samsung expects OnDemand compatible products to begin rolling out in the fall, although owners of current 2009 Samsung Blu-ray players, home theater systems, Samsung LCD and Plasma HDTVs Series 650 and above, and Samsung LED HDTVs Series 7000 and above, can access the service by downloading a firmware upgrade or downloading the OnDemand widget.
