Nokia trademarks suggest major expansion

Nokia C X and Booklet

Nokia is registering a number of trademarks that suggest a major effort to expand and relabel its phone lineup, as well as to introduce new types of devices. The company has filed for trademarks on the names Cseries and Xseries that imply two new phone lines. At present, its phones are divided into the Nseries media and Eseries work smartphones as well as its four-digit numerical devices like the 5800 XpressMusic.

Speculation from Puhelinvertailu is that Nokia will drop its at times confusing numerical phone naming scheme in favor of four categories known as Connect, Live, Achieve and Explore. The Connect phones would be basic feature phones, while Live phones would include fashion-oriented or otherwise more upscale non-smartphones like the 7500 Prism or 8800 Scirocco. It's not clear what would fit in the Achieve category, but the Explore line would likely merge both the Eseries and Nseries and include most or all of the true smartphones.

Other applications found by IntoMobile refer to Money, a wireless bank transfer system, and Booklet, a reference to computers and notebooks. The latter is believed to support rumors of Nokia's netbook plans, which would have it use either an Intel Atom or Qualcomm Snapdragon for a processor and possibly use Google Android instead of the Linux-based Maemo platform Nokia uses today on its tablets.

If borne out by Nokia's future product line, the changes are likely to be put in place to stem bleeding market share from the market leader. Although it remains the top pick for low-end phones, the company has continued to lose share overall and has been particularly bruised by Apple and Research in Motion, both of whom have taken share in the smartphone market. Nokia has been slow to adopt touchscreens and its flagship, the N97, has seen very mixed reviews and early software problems.
