AMD ATI FirePro V8750

AMD on Tuesday revealed a new flagship professional workstation card. The ATI FirePro V8750 has the same 800 shader (visual effect) units as the company's fastest Radeon HD cards but excels in sheer memory performance: the card comes with 2GB of GDDR5 graphics memory that handles a peak 115.2GB per second. The bandwidth is about 30 percent more than an NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800 but is estimated to be between 56 and 118 percent faster for high-end 3D modeling and other tasks that often need large amounts of fast memory.

Multi-card support is also more advanced: while on a basic level more than one card can act as a second display, CrossFire Pro mirrors CrossFire on mainstream cards and combines the rendering performance of two identical cards. The feature is retroactive and also applies to the FirePro V5700 and higher. General-purpose computing tasks are possible using either AMD's proprietary Stream technology or, in the near future, the more universal OpenCL standard.

V8750 cards should already be available today for $1,799 with dual DisplayPorts, one dual-link DVI port and a stereo link for 3D graphics. Support is currently limited to Linux and Windows operating systems.
