Eye-Fi adds Geo SD card
Eye-Fi on Wednesday announced it will soon add a Geo wireless SD memory card to its lineup that will be capable of geotagging photos exclusively for Mac computers. The 2GB SD card automatically saves GPS mapping information for captured photos and videos before transferring them to a given computer. It's primarily intended for Mac users and fully supports Apple's iPhoto '08 and '09 as well as MobileMe. As with other Eye-Fi cards, the photos are wirelessly transferred to a pre-selected folder on a Mac over a user's Wi-Fi network.
Using iPhoto '09's Places function, users can then sort of search their photo libraries by location. Users can also upgrade their Eye-Fi Geo card to share images online at MobileMe or one of 20 other photo-hosting sites for a $10 annual fee. The Eye-Fi Geo is now available at larger electronics shops as well as online via the Apple Store, priced at $60. The price includes lifetime geotagging services without an annual fee, unlike some other EyeFi cards.

At a current max of only 4GB, the long term usefulness of a memory card this size is fairly limited. I currently use 8 GB cards when shooting and can easily be on my second or third card at the end of the day. I would be very eager to get a couple of these if they were available in 16GB or 32G sizes. I love the idea of adding the GEO data - EYE FI is very creative and helping solve a problem that exist for active photographers.

I'm sure it limited by the physical dimensions of the memory chip - and still have enough room for a GPS sensor and wifi chip. So it might take a little bit for all parts to shrink enough to fit like that. I'm wondering if they will make a CF version for DSLR cameras...

The cards do not have GPS. They do geotagging, but using Skyhook's WiFi positioning based on nearby hotspots. This will not work anywhere that Skyhook doesn't have reliable information, nor will it work anywhere that there isn't a WiFi hotspot around.
