NEC unveils its first DisplayPort LCD

NEC MultiSync EA231WMi

NEC on Tuesday entered into the field of DisplayPort-capable displays through the 23-inch MultiSync EA231WMi. The full-size connector gives owners of newer computers a future-proof display option and comes alongside DVI and VGA inputs for those using older or less compatible formats. It also brings new features for the company outside of this, such as an ambient light sensor and a new multi-directional pad for navigating on-display menu options.

The 1920x1080 resolution LCD also pivots into portrait mode and has its own stereo speakers as well as a four-port USB hub. It generates just a 3,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio but, unlike many displays its size, uses an IPS (in-plane switching) panel and therefore has much more accurate color reproduction than the TN (twisted nematic) panels that are more common in this environment.

Shipments start in August at a price of $379.

    contrast

Many manufacturers come up with huge contrast ratios by turning up the brightness to unusable blowout levels. Dmin, or the blackest black, is more important and harder to achieve. Hopefully by publishing a reasonable contrast ratio, NEC is telling us that they've given us good black and usable brightness. Good to see DVI and Displayport too.
