Samsung YP M1 with Tegra

Samsung on Friday bowed a new high-end touchscreen media player aimed at the same high-end audience as the iPod touch. Although Internet access doesn't appear to be a feature, the YP-M1 is the first dedicated player to use NVIDIA's Tegra processor. The chipset both provides hardware decoding for playing back videos and also speeds up the unique widget-driven interface that lets users see settings at a glance.

The display itself is also a rare 3.3-inch AMOLED that produces more vivid colors than LCDs while simultaneously reducing power through the absence of a backlight needed for the older technology.

Format support is broad and includes common formats like AAC and MP3 for audio or H.264 and WMV for video but also formats that are sometimes excluded, such as FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, DivX, XviD and even Flash videos. Koreans also get a DMB tuner to watch live digital TV, while everyone gets FM radio.

In its home country, the YP-M1 will ship in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB versions. Most Samsung devices are brought over to the US, but any conversion of the new player will drop the DMB tuner. The only other company known to be introducing a media player based on Tegra is Microsoft, whose Zune HD will use the processor to decode 720p video. [via Akihabara]
