Apple tablet to run "extended" iPhone OS?

Calacanis on Apple Tablet

A further rumor has surfaced regarding Apple's supposed future tablet that potentially clears up its details. Mahalo chief Jason Calacanis on Tuesday made a brief Twitter post citing a developer working with Apple who says the tablet is real and using a "modified/extended" version of OS X iPhone. What that entails hasn't been made clear, though it implies more than just a higher-resolution iPhone interface.

While multiple tips have pointed to a roughly 10-inch tablet shipping either late this year or early in 2010, uncertainty has still existed as to whether it would use the traditional Mac platform or else some variant of the iPhone's software. A rumor regarding Apple's purported Cocktail album format for iTunes suggested the tablet would be timed with an iTunes update and thus that the tablet will be more of an advanced media player than a regular computer.

    half is not whole

Whatever it is it needs to be it's own thing. It can't be a small mac nor a big iPhone. Something in between is fine, but it needs to be implemented well for the device - not a crippled feature.

    Adv Media Player?

If the Apple tablet is only an advanced media player then I will be really disappointed with Apple. This is a golden opportunity for Apple to capture another market and that requires hand writing recognition, Wi-FI, Cellular Networking and ability to run some software. Anything less and it will be another glorified Kindle.

    If this is true

Then I get to take my paycheck elsewhere. Why do we need a bigger iPhone/iPod Touch? If Apple had produced a fully functional tablet PC that ran OSX and Windows 7 ... and suppported multitouch and a stylus I would have purchased two. This would have been incredible for Japanese/Korean/Chinese input. Oh well, disappointed again. Back to using my Bamboo.

    Easy now

"Oh well, disappointed again. Back to using my Bamboo."

For crying out loud, the thing is nothing more but a rumor, and you're already disappointed??

    Why would you need

a stylus for double-byte characters? The ChiPhone will be using character input for kanji with just a finger. From what I saw it was fairly accurate (at least with simple characters).

    Better Be

This had better be extended in the sense that the user/owner can run whatever software they want and have full root access to the filesystem. Otherwise, I shudder to imagine the train wreck.
