Prototype 3G iPod touch surfaces with camera [U]

3G iPod Touch Prototype

(Updated with video) A prototype of a third-generation iPod touch has been spotted today courtesy of images sent by the satellite radio show Covino and Rich. The collection of shots by the Maxim-run program show an opened device that appears near-identical to the current model but with a camera at top center, matching numerous case leaks. It also shows a small hole next to the camera that likely represents a microphone for rumored movie recording.

In supporting its claims of authenticity, the radio station shows an Apple logic board with a 2009 copyright and a chrome back with none of the logos or legal notices that are present on every iPod.

It's uncertain if the prototype represents a near-finished example of the touchscreen player. Many companies, including Apple, often use "mule" examples that may not show every design trait or feature. It nonetheless supports rumors that have also involved an iPod nano with a probable photo-only camera and storage upgrades that should double capacities to 16GB, 32GB and 64GB without changing the price.

on second thought it does not match the location of the iphone camera. It still looks fishy.

    A Yawner

If rumors that this is one has the same toy camera specs as the nano, it's not worth the bother. The camera needs to be as good as the one on the latest iPhone. And if they have to make the iPod touch a trifle deeper, fine. Put in a larger battery, giving it a fabulous battery life.

When will Apple learn to quit gutting the iPod touch because they see it as a threat to iPhone sales? They're totally different products. They're purchased for different reasons and come with radically different costs of ownership. Treating them as competitors makes no more sense than Toyota leaving a feature out of a pickup truck because it already offers the feature in a sports car.
