PS3 3 Firmware Live

Sony tonight quietly switched on its promised 3.0 firmware update for the PlayStation 3. The new version brings small but significant changes to the UI including icon-based shortcuts to recently available content, including downloads from the PlayStation Store and news from an in-XMB "What's New" section. Equally important is audio output to more than destination where it was previously limited to the main source, such as HDMI or the RCA output.

Other notable additions are animated theme backgrounds with matching avatars, a status bar in the upper right corner now shows new messages and friends online, and new features for trophies. Europeans should now have access to Sony's video service, while every region can now use the right analog stick to scrub through videos at different speeds.

The update as always is free and should work with both old models as well as the slim 120GB version.
