Toshiba preempts Apple with touch media tablet

Journe Touch supports HD, network streaming

Toshiba produced a surprise at IFA today with word of a touchscreen media tablet of its own. The Journe Touch is treated as a high-end mobile Internet device (MID) with an emphasis on video playback: the device can play HD video either at a reduced resolution on its 800x480 display or at full resolution through an HDMI output. Its Wi-Fi is used that way as well, as web browsing is considered secondary to streaming Internet video from YouTube or the movie service Acetrax.

An owner also has streamlined access to Flickr and Picasa for photos and can chat over Windows Live Messenger through text or voice. Facebook access and an RSS reader are preloaded as well.

The Windows CE MID can also play music and has 1GB of built-in storage plus an SDHC slot for content. Battery life is short at seven hours of music and just two hours of constant web browsing.

Journe Touch shipments start in the fall at an unknown price. A North American release is less than likely as the Journe brand hasn't reached the continent, but Toshiba is new to the MID category and hasn't outlined its plans.
