LG W63 and Color Pop LCDs

LG's turn at IFA saw it roll out two new desktop LCDs as well as supply early details of digital photo frames. The W63 series (shown at top) is made for gaming first and adds a number of touches just for PC or console games. A Thru Mode disables the usual image processing to cut down on lag at the expense of quality; Tru Light adds Philips-like ambient lighting to match the tone of some games; a chin-mounted speaker bar provides virtual surround sound better than most displays with their own audio.

Both computers and consoles are handled through the input choices on the W63, which has DVI and VGA for traditional input and both component as well as HDMI for modern gaming systems. LG only has one model, the 23-inch W2363V, which uses a 1080p TN panel and so gets a quick 2ms pixel response and a 70,000:1 contrast ratio at the cost of absolute color accuracy.

The W30 series fills out the line and is intended as much for decor as for actual use. Nicknamed the Color Pop line, each model's entire shell is dominated by a single bright color, such as blue, green, pink or purple. They're also thinner than most with a screen just under 1.5 inches thick at its deepest point. LG hasn't supplied full specs but promises an 18.5-inch model with a 1366x768 resolution and a 21.5-inch version with 1080p output.

The photo frames have received only early information but will have 2GB of memory and can play videos without any help.

No details have been given as to the US release of the W63 or the frames, but the Color Pop models should be ready for the US this month. [Color Pop photo via Engadget]
