OEM requirement lifted for CableCARD tuners

Microsoft, speaking at a Windows Media Center keynote at CEDIA, announced changes to the purchasing requirements for CableCARD tuners. The components will now be available as an aftermarket accessory, enabling customers to add to functionality to their own systems.

The devices were previously restricted to OEM computers, available from many computer makers as an optional accessory to ship with the system. Many users were able to work around the block, although the unrestricted availability should make the process easier.

Prices for the CableCARD option on complete systems ranges between $180 and $300. Cost and availability for the aftermarket cards remains unknown.[via Engadget]
