Western Digital ships 640GB notebook drive

updated 08:40 am EDT, Wed September 9, 2009

WD Scorpio Blue 640GB ready

Western Digital this morning began shipping the 640GB Scorpio Blue, one of the first drives above 500GB to fit in most notebooks. It uses two 320GB platters to reach its capacity while still measuring 9.5mm thick and thus thin enough to fit in particularly slim portables like the MacBook Pro. As a Blue series drive, it's aimed at the mainstream and spins at 5,400RPM with an 8MB cache.

The SATA II drive is selling today as a stand-alone upgrade for $149. Western Digital also supplies hard drives for computer manufacturers but hasn't named any customers for the hard drive upgrade.

    I love my 'blue' 500...

...it runs at a low temp & is the quietest drive I have never heard - the gains of the 7200 I tried came at a significant heat/noise cost with only a nominal speed bump...

    SSD!

I purchased a 128GB SSD drive and gotta tell ya, I don't think I could go back to a regular notebook drive, especially one as slow as a 5400rpm drive! Apps launch practically before you click on them, it doesn't get all hot like my old drive did, and the battery lasts muuuuch longer!

I know that SSDs seem expensive when compared to spinning drives, but that's only true for today... if you think back a few years ago, these drives cost the same as those old hard drives.

    Re. SSD!

While I can agree with you on the awesomeness that is SSD's. I can't justify the cost for the size. I need more space not more speed. Speed is nice but not with the tradeoff of space. Sure most users don't need a lot but I need at least 500GB. Any 500GB's SSD's out? I'll buy one :)
