Apple TV prices drop

Apple today quietly reshuffled the prices of the Apple TV for the first time since the 160GB model was added in May 2007. The company has reduced the price of the 160GB model to $229 (from $329) and has dropped the original 40GB model (once $229) entirely. Apple hasn't mentioned any feature set changes for the one remaining model.

The networked media hub has been one of Apple's most conservatively updated products but has usually sold well; its late 2008 sales were three times higher than for a year earlier. The company has long maintained that the device is a "hobby" but has also pledged to continue developing it and, in recent months, has been hiring developers for the product.

I'm surprised that anyone is buying

that device. It just seems so hobbled when it could be really made useful. Apple could have at least made the USB port functional for adding hard drives and tuners. At least the MacMini is still around and a lot can be done with that for media use.

AppleTV thrives only because of the active hacker

I think the only reason this product is doing so well is that there is a large, active hacker community adding new features all the time. Just browse http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki to see what's available: adding USB drives, playing non-Quicktime AVI files, a web browser..

And all it takes to install is putting files on a USB stick and rebooting your AppleTV. And it's simple to revert back to the original Apple software.

Yet another example of "jailbreaking" making a device 3x more useful.
