Clearwire begins plans for global WiMAX roaming

Clearwire Communications on Monday announced it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with WiMAX operators UQ Communications of Japan and Yota of Russia to allow international roaming. This would involve the three parties collaborating on business and technical aspects, as well as other WiMAX operators and Clearwire's Global Alliance Partner Program members.

Clearwire, UQ, and Yota all offer WiMAX services in their own markets. Clearwire will continue to work with its remaining global partners, including Malaysia's YTL Communications, Pakistan's wi-tribe, as well as Taiwan's Vee Telecom and Global Mobile on similar steps to allow roaming once their WiMAX networks are available.

The high-speed WiMAX mobile broadband service is already being offered in more than 20 major cities in the US.
